11/21/19 - Isabelle Stillman & Jerry Burgan

Solo singer-songwriter, Isabelle Stillman and guest act Jerry Burgan, founder of We 5, come together for one evening only as Jerry Burgan warms up the stage for Isabelle's dynamic stories.

Isabelle Stillman is a solo singer-songwriter out of Denver, CO. A high school English teacher and life-long singer. Isabelle combines her love of words, her insights on life, and her musical talent on her first full-length album, Middle Sister. Her stlye combines folk, Americana, country, and pop influences to create a sound that is varied in genre, but cohesive in artistry and lyric. As Isabelle steps into music, her stories from teaching and being a young woman in America make her stage performance funny and engaging, and her talent as a musician completes the picture.

She captures a Midwestern country-folk twang in her work and her personality. Her lyrics are smart, clever, and referential. Her reflections on growing up in America in the 21st Century are vivid in her work, using specific details and imagery to get at universal experiences. Her songs often poke fun at the world around her, while also getting at deep human truths. On stage, Isabelle's time as a high school English teacher comes through. She engages a room, plays to and with an audience, and keeps listening fun. She's been known to jerk tears and to illicit belly laughs. Her sound is a mesh of country, folk, roots rock, and pop that is distinctly hers and distinctly catchy. Isabelle has found a sound and a presence that are unique to her and one hundred percent authentic. She's funny. She's insightful. She's talented. She's the real deal.

Jerry Burgan has graciously offered to welcome Isabelle to The Coffee Gallery Backstage by opening the show for her.

Jerry Burgan graduated from the 60’s folk era to tour with the folk-rock innovators, We Five. When not leading the band for concerts, he wrote about the experience in Wounds to Bind – A Memoir of the Folk-Rock Revolution. Many of the stories can be heard in his solo shows, Jerry Burgan - Songs & Stories.

Many contemporary singer-songwriters still are still following the well-worn paths of Seeger, Paxton, Cash and Dylan, but there’s nothing quite like experiencing an original who plays it as he learned and lived it. Folk fans who first heard Tom Dooley on a transistor radio will savor Jerry’s classic approach to this music. For those who didn’t, it’s a chance to experience the grass roots magic of folk and Americana up close in the CGB’s charming, throwback environment. There will be no campfire or s’mores, but you’ll find state of the art electronic candles flickering at every table as you get lost in the songs and stories.

Singing along on the choruses is encouraged.
