11/14/21 - Art Podell, Tracy Newman & Lockdown Friends

Art Podell and Tracy Newman have played many shows at the Coffee Gallery and have a wonderful loyal fan base. For those of you who don’t know them, here’s a brief summary of who they are.

Art Podell is from Brooklyn and was an original member of The New Christy Minstrels. In the late 50s, early 60’s he was also one half of the duo “Art and Paul” on Columbia Records. (They were the reason Simon and Garfunkel weren’t called Art and Paul! Art Podell and Paul Potash were already signed to Colombia Records at the time.) Art and Paul’s two CDs were recently re-released by Sony. Art continues to perform, write songs, articles for music periodicals and he hosts ‘Roots Music and Beyond’ on KPFK-90.7FM Los Angeles once a month. He is a national folk music treasure. Website.

Tracy Newman has been playing guitar since she was 14. In 1965, She did a PBS series about folk music on an existing show for children called “What’s New.” You can find many excerpts from that show here. In the 70s Tracy was a founding member of The Groundlings Theatre, which led her to a long TV writing career starting on “Cheers,” and including “Ellen” for which her along with her writing partner, John Stark, won an Emmy for the “Ellen” coming-out episode. In 2003, Tracy left TV writing and started a company called Run Along Home for children’s songs. She has three CDs for grown-ups out and 3 CDs for kids. Website.

But wait, there’s more!

Tracy and Art are excited to tell you about their “Lockdown Friends.” One of the good things that came out of last year’s madness.

All through 2020 and 2021 we visited some terrific Open Mics on Zoom and once we discovered the Fiddler’s Crossing Open Mic on Wednesday nights at 7:30, we never missed it. (Peter Cutler and Deborah Hand are in charge. Fiddlers is in Tehachapi, CA.) Well, in short order, we all became a family! So, when Bob Stane asked us to return to The Coffee Gallery, we decided to pluck a few guys (they happen to be “guys” this time,) from the Fiddler’s Crossing Open Mic and bring them along with us to our show."

Here are the “Stars” in our show:

Michael Gardner has been writing songs since the early 70s. He has a 2006 CD “Songbook” with his band One Foot In which is available online at all the usual places. Michael has practice law in So Cal for 38 years and performed at the Coffee Gallery multiple times, as well as many other venues. He has two daughters, has been married 50 years and is about to release a new CD. SoundCloud.

Dennis Roger Reed is a roots/folk singer/songwriter and instrumentalist based in So Cal. He’s released 5 solo CDs (his most recent, Down at the Washington Hotel, this year,) and his work has been written about and received airplay internationally. He’s performed throughout the US and Canada at folk, blues, and bluegrass festivals, clubs, bars, and corporate events. He’s played the Coffee Gallery several times. Website.

Dr. Scotty Jacobs, originally from Columbus, Ohio, and now living in San Diego, is proud to have been a long-time irregular member of The Punta Gorda Guitar Army and Neo-Beatnik Revolution Ensemble and is the 2003 Ukulele Champion of Punta Gorda, Florida. He got his first acoustic guitar at 10 years old. He also plays slide guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and the jazz horn. He has played his original songs live on WMNF in Tampa and WCCF in Punta Gorda. When not busy performing or learning to speak So Cal as a second language, he likes to practice veterinary medicine and surgery.

Richard Lappin is a latecomer to music, not picking up a guitar until he was almost 30, but he quickly developed a taste for songwriting. He is a psychotherapist which he thinks goes well with songwriting. He has recorded one CD of original songs.

Two hours of terrific music and belly laughs. See you there in person!
