10/21/21 - ROADHOUSE SERIES

The Roadhouse Series Presents: A Tribute to Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble Volume One, the legendary drummer for The Band's concert-jam series who died of cancer in 2012.

If you've followed Americana-roots music over the last 25 years, you may have run across Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble.

Originally, Helm began the series in the late 1990s to help with financial support for his cancer treatment. The shows, held at his home in Woodstock, New York, grew to legendary status and gave Levon the chance produce a homage to the traveling medicine shows he once described in the film, The Last Waltz. In the film he told director Martin Scorsese:

"After the finale, they'd have the midnight ramble, The kids would be sent to bed. The songs would get a little bit juicier. The jokes would get a little funnier and the prettiest dancer would really get down and shake it a few times. A lot of the rock and roll duck walks and moves came from that."

With his cancer in remission, Helm continued to do the shows at his home studio in Woodstock for over a decade. Some of the performers who appeared at the Rambles over the years included Emmylou Harris, Dr John, Gillian Welch, Rickie Lee Jones, Eric Andersen, Mavis Staples, My Morning Jacket, Justine Townes Earle and Allen Toussaint.

So, for October, The Roadhouse Series will honor Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble with the dynamic and entertaining lead singer, Joel Bennett and the Moonshine Daredevils including Bob Gothar (Guitar), Paul Marshall (Bass), Owen Goldman (drums), Neil Rosengarden(Piano) and Matt Lomeo(Harmonica). Special guests include Fjaere, Scott Memmer, Cynthia Brando, Pat Nason and David Fry.
