10/08/22 - The Ash Grove Alumni

MATINEE! The years between 1958 and 1960 were a hell of a time for traditional music in Los Angeles. In 1960, Bob Stane became involved in running the Ice House in Pasadena. Three years earlier...

...a man by the name of Ed Pearl opened the doors to The Ash Grove across town at 8162 Melrose Avenue.

The Ash Grove became a legendary folk and blues club and showcased a variety of regional and ethnic music. From gospel to jazz, Jewish to Latino, bluegrass to blues- the Ash Grove presented it all with imagination and respect. From its inception until 1973, it served as the hub of a highly influential folk music scene. Many legendary artists, such as Ry Cooder, and Linda Ronstadt graced its stage.

The Ash Grove Alumni, anchored by Joe Chambers of The Chambers Brothers and singer/songwriter and producer Wendy Waldman (Bryndle, Linda Ronstadt)) bring the spirit, fervor, and flavor of that long-gone night spot to The Coffee Gallery, overseen by none other than the aforementioned folk music icon, Mr. Stane.

Wendy Waldman is a critically-acclaimed recording artist and the writer of much loved and multi-platinum selling songs. Her music brilliantly interlaces elements of country, pop, jazz, and R&B. Underneath it all is the folk music she loved and listened to at the Ash Grove.

Joseph “Joe” Chambers is the celebrated singer and songwriter of The Chambers Brothers, a group that plugged gospel and blues into the hot electric socket of West Coast psychedelia. He was recently seen as part of the Academy Award-winning documentary, Summer of Soul.

The Ash Grove Alumni band features some of L.A.’s finest musicians, including singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Steve Moos, Taras Prodaniuk (Merle Haggard, Richard Thompson) on bass, Scott Babcock on drums, Phil Parlapiano(John Prine) on keyboards, David Horne on percussion, and Don Kirkpatrick (Rod Stewart) on guitar.

In October of 2020 the Ash Grove Alumni performed at Royce Hall, where they were an acclaimed feature of UCLA’s Tune in Festival. The Ash Grove Alumni fire up old embers while extending the tradition into the future, proving that time has still come today.
