07/20/19 - Jerry Burgan: Songs & Stories

MATINEE! Jerry Burgan's Songs & Stories with Debbie Burgan: From the Earth to the Moon. A night of songs celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Landing and Moon Walk.

PLUS a special showing of the film, “With Their Eyes On The Stars”...Here’s a shot taken of Jerry at the Columbia Space Museum.

When Apollo 11 landed on the moon and successfully returned to earth in 1969, it completed a challenge set forth by President Kennedy years before. On the 50th anniversary of that historic moon landing, I’ll be showing a documentary film created for NASA in the early days of the space program that began with 7 Mercury astronauts. With Their Eyes On the Stars was developed in 1963 to cast them blazing a trail for the amazing events that would still be essential for success.

Jerry Burgan, co-founder of We Five will tell the fascinating tale of how it all happened before showing of restored 16 mm copy of the film at the Coffee Gallery Backstage on Saturday, July 20 for a special matinee audience. Jerry will be joined by his wife—and We Five lead singer--Debbie Burgan for several songs from the folk era that inspired the soundtrack. There will be time for Q&A, and John Stewart’s song, Armstrong, written on the first moonwalk day.

Speaking of trail blazing, this film features several songs written by John Stewart—then of the Kingston Trio. The music was arranged by Mike Stewart and performed by the Ridgerunners—the Claremont folk group that became We Five.

Jerry Burgan – Songs & Stories -- From the Earth to the Moon….tells more of what will happen….Those who have followed my Songs & Stories shows have probably heard me talk about the film "With Their Eyes on the Stars" that featured songs by John Stewart performed by John and his brother Mike's group, The Ridgerunners. While America was behind the Soviet Union at the start, we successfully completed the task a year ahead of the goal.

Talking with Bob Stane about the upcoming anniversary of that feat, he suggested that I provide some background, do an introduction, and run a copy of the actual 16mm film at The Coffee Gallery in a Matinee on Saturday, July 20 at 2:00 PM.

While in the 'storytelling' mode, I'll sing some related songs and provide some stories about how that film triggered several events which ultimately lead to Mike Stewart, Bob Jones, Beverly Bivens, Pete Fullerton and I becoming We Five--and recording You Were On My Mind.

I just learned that Tholow Chan will be in town, and he's agreed to join us for a few songs, as well. I know it's short notice, but it will be fun so I hope you can make it.
