05/27/22 - Songs of Leonard Cohen, Performed by Bill Burnett

Bill Burnett has brought his deep voice and deep songwriting to our stage many times in the past. On Friday, May 27 he and a small gifted band will focus on the music, humor and humanism...

...of the late Leonard Cohen. The artist who wrote “There’s a crack in everything…that’s how the light gets in” is far more than just “Hallelujah” and “Bird on a Wire.” Burnett will fill the evening with funny and penetrating songs penned by the patron saint of all that is broken.

Perhaps more than any other artist to emerge from the great 60s musical renaissance, Leonard Cohen spoke to the pains and pleasures of being human in a time of political, personal and sexual revolution. In his fifteen studio albums and numerous live performances he explored religion, romance, isolation, politics, sexuality and death, starting with "Suzanne" in 1967 and finishing with "You Want It Darker," his amazing recording released just a few months before his death in 2016. (A posthumous album "Thanks For The Dance" has recently been released.) Bill Burnett has been inspired by Cohen throughout that time. Bill has written songs for Bette Midler, Patti Lupone, Tim Curry, The Licata Brothers, Dean Stevens and Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Flintstone, to name a few. After covering Cohen in his own shows for years he looks forward to serving up a piquant sampling of the full range of Leonard's melodies and lyrics.

Joining Bill onstage will be noted composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Geoff Levin, bassist extraordinare Randon Davitt, and vocalist Rhiannon Lewis, a fine songwriter in her own right. Together they will explore the full range of Cohen’s six decade career, and provide eye-opening commentary into his life and legend.
