02/14/20 - The Folk Collection

What a Valentine’s Day treat! The Folk Collection could just as well be named the "Singing the Classic Songs of the '60s Folk Era" group.

Much of their repertoire is familiar to audiences of all ages. They have been influenced by all of the well-known folk groups of the era, but they have their own blend, sound, and humor. Audiences get a real kick out of their unique medley arrangement of the great TV western theme songs of the '50s (including from such hit shows as "Rawhide," "Davy Crockett," "Maverick," and "Bonanza)." The Folk Collection grew up loving folk music, and the turnouts at their shows – including here at The Coffee Gallery Backstage more than 20 times since they first played here in 2005, confirms they have struck a "chord" with audiences, who really like joining in the singing with the guys when the mood and song fit.

The Folk Collection has performed at performing arts centers, coffee houses, clubs, and house concerts throughout the country, and usually to standing ovations.

It all started in the mid 60’s, when Hollywood High School buddies Ed Labowitz and Tony Unger performed in a local folk trio. After the military, Tony was a touring musician and pop singer for 15 years – before he became a Baptist senior pastor. Ed went on to law school at Cal and practices entertainment law when he isn't singing, including representing the next generation of many of the groups whose songs The Folk Collection sings. Mike Sirota played folk songs as a camp counselor in Los Angeles, received his teaching credential, and now runs his own business when he is not serving as a cantorial soloist at a synagogue in the San Gabriel Valley and as a member of The Folk Collection.

The Folk Collection grew up loving folk music, and the turnouts at their shows – including The Coffee Gallery Backstage -- confirm that they have struck a "chord" with audiences, who really like joining in the singing with the guys when the mood and song fit. Their sweet three-part harmonies bring family and friends together, and their humorous banter and ad-libs make merriment and memories. Don’t miss an opportunity to share an evening – again, or for the first time – with The Folk Collection. You will leave singing, smiling, and toe-tapping. Their shows here always sell out, so reserve early!
