05/02/19 - Richard Smith: Guitarist and Showman

This consumate guitarist and showman absolutely amazes with what he can do on a guitar. With major skills and a good amount of showmanship and humor, he usually sings comical parodies.

Bob Stane’s comments on his last appearance (a review by Bob)…” Absolutely sensational. Wowed the crowd! Amazing guitar work and great stagecraft. Funny in all ways. Comes only once per year.”

Richard’s ever changing repertoire will include a wide variety of music from Scott Joplin Rags, Sousa marches, Mozart, fiddle tunes, standards, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed tunes, Django Reinhardt gypsy jazz, Bach, Beatles tunes, pop tunes, Chopin, originals, lightning fast barn-burners to beautiful ballads. This promises to be an outstanding blend of virtuoso musicianship and vocals. Richard’s flawless technique will have your toes tapping , melt your heartstrings and have your jaws hanging open. He even covers Bluegrass.

His flawless technique, quickly switching between fingerpicking and flatpicking, not only earned him the admiration of his peers such as Tommy Emmanuel, Doyle Dykes, Muriel Anderson and Joscho Stephan, but also numerous awards. Upon his only participation Smith won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, in 2001. The National Thumbpickers Hall of Fame named him Thumbpicker of the Year in 2008 and inducted him into the Hall of Fame in 2009.[6] Furthermore, Smith received the Golden Thumbpick Award by the Association of Fingerstyle Guitarists.
