04/05/19 - I See Hawks in L.A. and Ray Bonneville

Solid performers and so different. This is a “take our word for it” act. Highly skilled, often witty, always cutting edge and a well respected group. They have performed many times at the Coffee Gallery.

I SEE HAWKS IN L.A…. The Hawks are an L.A. country rock band, in an era that doesn’t have many of those left. You can argue country rock started in the 70′s with the hippies in the canyons west of Los Angeles high on nature and homegrown weed. Today it’s more aligned with a struggling middle class in the eastern suburbs where meth is the cheapest option. But we’re an irrepressible lot and we take our victories where we find them. I See Hawks In L.A. seem to know that, and with their harmonies and story-telling it’s easy to listen to a few of the tunes on Mystery Drug and find yourself with a nice little high.

"These freewheeling lords of California psych country approach their music as if it were a portal, an unseen threshold that, once crossed, promises a wholly unpredictable experience. The Hawks' singular style operates on an epic scale, exploring weird panoramas of hallucinatory metaphor with a sound as much traditional hillbilly as it is acceleratedlysergic-rock spontaneity. Any flight taken with I See Hawks In L.A. assures a view to startling new perspectives. Up, up and away.” ~ Jonny Whiteside, L.A. WEEKLY.

With a greasy guitar style, horn-like harmonica, smoky vocals and pulsing foot percussion he rivets audiences. Ray plays more than 150 shows a year in US, Canada and Europe.

In 1999 he won the Juno award (Canada’s Grammy) and was nominated twice more. His song about New Orleans, “I am the Big Easy” was the most played song by American folk DJs, and won “Song of the Year” in 2009. Ray also won the International Blues Challenge in 2012 in Memphis.
