03/16/19 - The Burgans: Friends & Family Extravaganza

When this group locks together ‘in the pocket’ – Magic happens!
You can’t miss it if you don’t see it—and being there is something you never forget.

Had a 60's flashback lately? Jerry Burgan’s been singing folk music for Bob Stane at the Ice House since the mid-60’s when his folk group morphed into "We Five". Sharing stages with pioneer writers like Hoyt Axton and John Stewart, and other folk-rock innovators like the Byrds, The Association, and The First Edition with Kenny Rodgers.

While in the Way Back Machine, flash on TV variety shows: Think "Peter, Paul & Mary" join "Andy Williams" for Don’t Think Twice, or "Soupy Sales" does the Soupy Shuffle while "We Five" sings Daydream on Hullabaloo. Folk acts gathered on college campuses for one-time performances in what Pete Seeger called, a Hootenanny: Every artist did their own thing, but also joined with one another for new songs or unique arrangements before everyone gathered together a sing along finale.

The Coffee Gallery Backstage is one of the few places you can still encounter that range of music and spontaneity on a regular basis. Jerry and his wife Debbie, who began singing lead with "We Five" in 1968, have called on some dear friends and family members to make it happen again on Saturday, March 16.

With their unique sound and chemistry as a foundation, The Burgans will be joined by several excellent musicians and singers: Tholow Chan, on leave from the New Christy Minstrels, will provide a seamless musical foundation, rich vocals, and plenty of off-the-wall humor that always delights audiences for the popular Burgan & Chan – Folk Songs and Stories set.

Providing an extra dynamic on some special songs with The Burgans will be "We Fives’" long-time friend and bassist, Terry Rangno. He’s been delighting audiences for decades since leaving his acting career in roles with the likes of Paul Newman, ‘Little” Ricky Nelson, and The Remarkable Mr Pennypacker, to join the Navy and make music his life. Enhancing the festivities for a special segment with Terry, will be singer/song writer/guitarist—and namesake for the group Caris—David Caris.

Adding a royal touch to the family element–while lowering the age demographic—will be King Courtney. Her eclectic song selection and quirky arrangements are as charming as her smile. She’ll be joined by her husband (also the Burgans’ son) Jeremy Burgan. He’s a classically trained musician and specialist in Bob Jones-inspired We Five guitar licks, who will supply 6-string and 12-string guitar sounds throughout the program. This night will be special, so don’t miss it!
